UMG Classic: apeX defeat EnVyUs in finals

Despite an early defecit, apeX battles back and secures their third major in victory in the last month.

After two day’s of play, and a sixteen team bracket that was filled with impressive teams, only two groups remained. Team EnVyUs and apeX NA squared off in the finals for the second time this tournament. Their first meeting resulted in a 3-2 finish in favor of nV. While that previous meeting would give EnVy the upper hand to begin the match, being one map down was not an insurmountable task for the apeX squad, who had battled through the loser’s bracket all day.

The only challenge apeX had all tournament was this EnVy group, and it looked like much of the same in the first map of the finals, and sixth map of the series overall. EnVy jumped out to an early 3-0 lead on SnD Arkaden, and apeX was nearly one map away from being eliminated. However, the resilient group battled back, and evened the series at three apiece in the blink of an eye. A sneak plant on the A site and some evasive maneuvers by BigTymer helped apeX kill the clock and secure a victory in overtime.

After nearly being on the brink of elimination, apeX swung the momentum back in their favor, as the series stood even at three maps apiece. The seventh map in the series was set to break the tie on CTF Bootleg. Here the two teams demonstrated just how evenly matched they are; standing even in flag captures after thirty minutes of play. The teams squared off in a third overtime game where apeX’s BigTymer took the game into his own hands. With nearly thirty kills, and clutch plays throughout, he led his team to victory and helped them regain the lead in the series.

After a demoralizing choke on map six, and three gut-wrenching overtimes on map seven, Envy had certainly lost their momentum as they headed into the eighth map of the series. Despite taking the first round of Lockdown, SnD, the EnVy group couldn’t keep it together, and apeX picked up the next three rounds. Standing one round away from a second place finish, Twizz helped extend the series with some clutch moves  to make the score 3-2. However, they would not be so lucky in the next round, as Twizz couldn’t fill out the clutch a second time, as he let time expire on the offensive end without planting the bomb.

The apeX group had completed their comeback, and won their third major event in the last month. Team EnVyUs took second place, and proved themselves a top force in the game, as they played well throughout the weekend. OpTic Gaming finished third at the event, and also proved that they can hang with some of the game’s top teams.
